Amy Back

Amy Back’s practice is concentrated on energy, commercial real estate, construction, general counsel, and general business related issues. Ms. Back worked for two years at RWE Renewables (formerly E.ON Climate and Renewables) on wind and solar projects throughout the United States and Canada. Her work included drafting and negotiating real estate contracts (such as leases, easements, and purchase and sale agreements), operations and maintenance agreements, and other related service and consulting contracts. Ms. Back also worked on due diligence activities in support of construction activities and tax equity closings.

Before RWE, Ms. Back spent 5 years as senior legal counsel of Enbridge Energy, the world’s longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system, located in both Canada and the United States. During her tenure as senior legal counsel at Enbridge, Ms. Back managed multiple projects across 8 states which included drafting and negotiating engineering, procurement, construction, and operations and maintenance agreements. Such work included over $2 billion in negotiated construction contracts as well as supplier agreements. Ms. Back also completed a number of pre-construction project purchases and sales and operational matters.

In addition, prior to her tenure at Enbridge, Ms. Back was Planning Section Chief and Project and Executive Assistant at Avery Pipeline Services (an independent contractor of Enbridge). She also taught substantive and procedural coursework for two years at the Michigan State University College of Law Rental Housing Clinic.

Ms. Back has extensive experience negotiating engineering, procurement, construction operations and maintenance, software, consulting, services, confidentiality and other related agreements, with representative matters described below.

Representative Projects and Engagements

  • Successfully managed all real estate due diligence for acquisition of Iowa wind project.
  • Successfully managed all real estate due diligence for disposition of a Canadian wind project.
  • Successfully managed all legal aspects of acquisition of land rights via negotiation and litigation for 186-mile Illinois pipeline project.
  • Developed and implemented legal and negotiation strategies which resulted in expedited access to land six months early.
  • Successfully managed construction contract negotiations and permit acquisition for new construction of 6 pipeline pump stations in Wisconsin and Minnesota.


Ms. Back received her Juris Doctor degree in 2005 from Michigan State University College of Law, her Master of Science degree in Rhetoric and Technical Communication in 2003 from Michigan Technological University, and her Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Scientific and Technical Communication in 2000 from Michigan Technological University.
